Who doesn't want to look gorgeous on their wedding day? Unfortunately, with all the conflicting beauty tips that our friends give, the marketing gimmicks from salons and ads, and the constant barrage of home remedies from social media, your head and your skin can go for a toss! After all, it's easy to make mistakes and end up trying or doing the wrong thing for your skin or hair. Often, doing the wrong skin care or hair care can result in zits, rashes or extreme dullness. In fact, I see a lot of soon to be brides in my clinic who have made simple beauty mistakes, and ended up majorly panicked right before their big day! Luckily, I am here! Beauty Bad #1: Using a Sulphate Shampoos
Frequent shampooing with products containing sulphate, can cause damage and breakage to your hair. Sulphates are strong detergents that dry out your strands and make them rough and frizzy. A prospective bride should use a sulphate-free shampoo, but not more three times a week.
Beauty Bad #2: Not Conditioning Your Hair
When you ignore your conditioner, you make your hair frizzier and more damaged when it just doesn't need to be. The fact is that the sun and pollution in the air damages your strands. Conditioner will help protect your hair by forming a gentle layer around the hairs' shafts! Make a habit of using conditioner for your tresses each time you shampoo your hair. Hair conditioner smoothens down your tresses, and prevents frizziness. After all, on your wedding day, you need to have hair that is easily styled. And the drier it is, the harder it is to make it look perfect!
Beauty Bad #3: Using Too Many Home Remedies
I cannot count how many crying brides have come to me with rashes or burns after using toothpaste on a zit, or lemon on their face. The fact is that even though they are natural, they can still cause damage to your skin. Lemon is a known irritant and can also make your skin sensitive to the sun, resulting in red rashes and irritation. Toothpaste when applied to zits can result in chemical burns and dark marks! Ultimately, its best to avoid trying any new home remedy less than a week before the wedding.
Beauty Bad #4: Going Scrub Crazy!
A lot of brides concerned with dullness will come to me with dry, red and itchy skin. When I ask them what they have been doing, they tell me that they have been scrubbing their face daily with exfoliating scrubs or ubtans and their dullness just isn't going away! The fact is that when you exfoliate your skin too much, your skin gets even duller because you are stripping away the good with the bad. You remove the important skin barrier that protects your skin from the outside elements and keeps nutrients and moisture inside. Never scrub more than once a week, and only do it gently with soft round motions on the face.
Beauty Bad #5: Not Wearing Sunblock
For brides who want to glow and get rid of their tan, not wearing sunblock is essentially a skin crime. The only way to protect your skin from the sun is to wear sunblock. The UV rays in India are extremely strong, and they can even penetrate windows when you are in the car or at home. Make sure you wear a sun block both indoors and outdoors, and wear at least 2 tablespoons every 4 hours! That is the correct quantity to form an adequate barrier between your skin and the sun!
What's Your Best Bet?
If you want to look gorgeous on your wedding day, its best to get professional help from a certified dermatologist. Go at least 1-3 months before the wedding if you can so your skin concerns and needs can be adequately handled. Instead of salon facials, consider getting dermatologist or laser based facials like the celeb favorite New York facial that will work on your pores, glow, pigmentation and more. Ultimately, you want to look photoshopped, and you want the effect to last. So look for treatments that will make you look gorgeous before, during and after the wedding!
